Wat onderscheidt conventionele en niet-conventionele fabricagetechnieken? – Over het algemeen omvat conventionele fabricage het veranderen van de vorm van een werkstuk met behulp van een werktuig van een harder materiaal. Het machinaal bewerken van harde materialen met conventionele methoden kan veel tijd en energie vergen en hoge kosten met zich meebrengen. Bovendien kan conventionele machinale bewerking leiden tot overmatige gereedschapsslijtage en kwaliteitsverlies van het product als gevolg van geïnduceerde restspanningen tijdens de fabricage. Daarom kunnen, vooral voor harde legeringen, niet-conventionele fabricagetechnieken betere alternatieven zijn. Terwijl conventionele fabricageprocessen over het algemeen mechanische energie (beweging) gebruiken, gebruiken niet-conventionele fabricageprocessen andere vormen van energie. De belangrijkste vormen van energie die niet-conventionele fabricageprocessen gebruiken zijn: thermische, chemische en elektrische energie. Er kunnen een groot aantal voordelen zijn van niet-conventionele fabricagetechnieken ten opzichte van conventionele methoden. Om er maar een paar te noemen, niet-conventionele fabricage kan een stillere werking en geen geluidsoverlast met zich meebrengen, zoals het geval is bij Chemical Machining. Bij niet-conventionele fabricage kan materiaalverwijdering plaatsvinden met of zonder spaanvorming. Bij elektrochemische bewerking vindt bijvoorbeeld materiaalverwijdering plaats als gevolg van elektrochemische oplossing op atomair niveau. Bij niet-conventionele fabricage kan er minder materiaal worden verspild als gevolg van lage of geen slijtage in vergelijking met conventionele fabricage. Aan de andere kant hebben niet-conventionele fabricagemethoden enkele nadelen, zoals hogere kapitaalkosten en de behoefte aan bekwame operators. Ook zijn niet-conventionele fabricagemethoden economisch niet geschikt voor elk type materiaal.
